AIR-RENEW - Unmanned Aerial Robot for high structures building and maintenance
In recent years, unmanned aerial platforms have become common devices for surveillance and inspection, thanks to their high maneuverability, excellent control and low cost. Many companies have unveiled their products with different configurations but all of them share their vision of an immediate future with widespread use for multiple applications. On the other hand, all kind of robots have increased their spectrum of applications, as new sensors and actuators are added, providing great flexibility. Among the possible functions, maintenance is now a key target in robotic development, especially for high-risk or difficult-access areas. Air-renew project aims to combine advances in the above mentioned fields by designing an aerial platform (the “Flying Ground”) with the ability of deploying several robots, which are destined to particular subtasks. This system will be extremely flexible, carrying the robots tailored to each specific demand to the area where they are needed and providing the needed tools, (such as positioning and communication) for their collaborative tasks. As for the test scenario, the chosen environment is the maintenance of a wind turbine, specifically the case of the surface cracking. However, the general application of the Flying Ground structure will lie in the big structures maintenance, as described in the description.
